5 SEO Tips to Increase Your Website’s SERP Ranking

  • by

SEO is not dead! There, I said it…

Good news, right?

It’s amazing to realise you can still rank high on Google’s search engine if you follow certain practices. However, it’s not as easy as it used to be, where you can place keywords on your website and you’re good to go.

I have listed several tips (including bonus tips) you can use today to boost your SEO.

1. Keywords and Landing Pages

To increase your ranking on Google, it’s important to have the right keywords on your web pages. Don’t just think of the keywords you believe might be the right one for your business. Take some time to carry out keyword research and identify the keywords people are currently searching, and the level of competition.

When starting, it’s best to choose keywords that aren’t highly competitive. This way it’s easier for you to rank on page 1 on Google.

Once you have identified the right keywords to use, it’s time to create new landing pages for each important keyword. For example, if you’re running a dermatology clinic, you would need a landing page for the following keywords: Skin Cancer, Acne, Burns etc.

To improve your local rankings, you can add your preferred location(s) to a title (keyword) of each landing page. For example, Acne Treatment in Lagos, or Acne Treatment in Nairobi.

Bonus: Having the same keyword on your meta tags, headings and pictures will boost your ranking.

2. Relevant Inbound Links

Some marketers believe that inbound links are the most important aspects of increasing your search rankings. This might have been the case a while ago, but this has changed.

But first, what are inbound links?

These are links that come from an external website to yours.

Google ranks your website based on the quality of your inbound links. If you run a clinic and most of your inbound links are from a betting website, it would reduce your rankings or better yet, increase your competitor who has inbound links from reputable healthcare websites.

It’s advisable to get inbound links from credible organisations that have good page rankings. Sites like online newspaper, government sites etc.

Bonus: Generating inbound links from your email marketing campaign is a quick and efficient way to increase your ranking. Simply make sure you have the relevant keyword as the anchor text.

Additional Bonus: It’s also important to have outbound links i.e. links going from your site to other sites. This helps build your site’s credibility.

3. Leverage Social Media

It’s important to link your website from your respective social media channels. The more inbound links you have from websites like Facebook, LinkedIn etc, the higher you will rank on Google.

Some social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn etc have internal publishing platforms where you can write articles around your chosen topics. You can replicate a blog post on your website, and changed the title on the social media article. As long as you cite at the bottom of the article that it was originally found on your website, you wouldn’t be penalised by Google.

Whenever you publish a blog on your website, always share it on all of your social media platforms, including Google My Business. This helps to keep inbound links consistently coming to your website.

Bonus: Sign up to sites like Reddit and contribute to the relevant subreddit, with a reference to a blog post on your website that buttresses your point.

4. Write for People. Optimise for Google

When writing your content, it’s really important to note that you aren’t writing to rank on the first page of Google. The more you focus on being on the first page of Google, the more difficult it becomes to write a copy that attracts the right audience.

Take a minute or two to think about your audience and what they would love to read or learn from you. Your content should be relevant and entertaining at the same time so that your visitor keeps reading and staying on your website.

The more you can get your visitors engaged on your website, the higher your website will climb in Google’s Search Engine Result Pages (SERP)

Avoid adding keywords just to please the lord of Google, because it could be flagged as having a high keyword density. Over the years, Google has become more sophisticated so several techniques like this won’t help you rank high on its search engine.

You need to have keywords in the right places to optimise your content, but first, make sure you are writing for your audience.

Bonus: Don’t write on topics solely because it would get you to the first page on Google. You need to find out if people are searching for the topic you’re going to write on. This is what would keep them coming and sharing with others.

5. Optimise your site for mobile

We live in a mobile-first world, where most of our daily routine involves engaging with our mobile phones, and the number of active mobile users keeps growing.

When creating content for your website, it’s important to make sure it’s optimised for mobile. This includes having the right keywords and CTAs above the fold, writing in short paragraphs to make your content more digestible, and having an optimal speed that keeps the user on the page.

One way you can also optimise your site is by having a good content structure with relevant headings. This will get your post featured on Google’s snippet, which in turn will help boost your page’s ranking on Google.

The users’ experience (UX) on mobile is a good key indicator on whether they would leave or stick around to read or watch the content on your website. For instance, it should be easier for them to scroll to the top of the page without having to manually scroll with the thumb.

Therefore, endeavour to offer a rich experience to people who visit your website.

Bonus: Use images that can easily be seen on mobile. Don’t use images that are optimised for desktop, usually horizontal-rectangle.

There are various ways to grow your traffic and increase your rankings on Google’s SERP. Don’t try to use black-hat (illegal or diabolic) techniques to generate traffic, because it never ends well.
